The Lwalwa have wooden masks with a diamond shaped structure. These masks are used for initiations and funerals, and bring prosperity to the tribe. These highly stylized masks have a large rectilinear nose, a protruding mouth and lengthened eyes that sit under a wide forehead. The masculine Lwalwa mask has a powerful nose, with a protruding bridge. The feminine mask from this region has a blunter nose. These restrained but daring masks recall the works of Picasso.

The Lwalwa live near Kasai, in a large region between Angola and Zaire. Other people from this region, the Kongo of Kasai, and the Dinga make diamond shaped masks like the Lwalwa for initiation rites, hence the stylistic variations.
